Britisher Maryanne India Beare has written to Attorney General (AG) Dappula de Livera last week requesting him to expedite the case relating to her son’s suspected killing. The case is currently being heard in a Magistrate’s Court.
Her son, 37-years-old Charles Jeevan Beare came to Sri Lanka in November 2017 seeking treatment for his drug addiction. The treatment was carried out at Seasons Lanka – the Sri Lankan branch of an Australian resort-type drug rehabilitation centre located in Kalutara. Charles was found dead at a park in Colombo in January 2018.
However, days after his death, the rehab centre was shut down and the other addicts under treatment were repatriated to their respective countries while the Australian staff had reportedly fled Sri Lanka.
The death is being treated as a result of a murder and currently under investigation. Another case has been filed by the Tourist Police on charges of Seasons Lanka and its Sri Lankan partner, Certis Lanka having misled the public by advertising the centre as a licensed drug rehabilitation centre and drawing foreigners to the country to undergo rehabilitation programmes.
When contacted by Daily Mirror, Certis Lanka Executive Director Jeevaka Wijesinghe said Certis Lanka had only rented out their property to the Hader Group to launch their rehabilitation facility and in no way involved in the operations of this centre.
Meanwhile, in her letter the AG, Ms. Beare also requested the AG to transfer the case to the High Court.
