It is important and advisable if people are vigilant and beware of the danger posed by COVID-19 and be wise and watchful in their activities during the Sinhala/Hindu New Year festival season, the emergence of the third wave of coronavirus could be easily averted, Public Health Inspectors' (PHI) Union Secretary Mahendra Balasuriya said.

He said an atmosphere could be felt in the country for the emergence of another COVID-19 cluster if people do not act responsibly.

However, people should keep in their minds to celebrate this Sinhala/Hindu New Year strictly adhering to stringent health guidelines, he said.

"Nowadays people have completely forgotten about the fear which they had in their minds that COVID-19 could strike back at any time, and it could pose a potential threat if the preparations are not done for the Sinhala/Hindu New Year festival ignoring the consequences in the past," Mr. Balasuriya said.

In the last few days, a lot of people were seen getting ready for the New year by engaging in shopping activities and it is disappointing to notice that the shoppers were not given adequate comfy and protection by the business community when the customers entered their clothing stores and other business premises, he said.

Though the COVID situation is under control at present, it may strike back at any time, Mr. Balasuriya warned. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
