Responding to criticisms over his remarks with regard to GCE A/L results, MP Bandula Gunawardana today stood his ground and said laws should be changed if A/L results of government and international schools were to be analysed together.

The MP on Tuesday said A/L results of government and international schools cannot be analysed or published together.

Many individuals, including Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and former Cricketer Mahela Jayawardane criticised the MP’s remarks.

Speaking at a news briefing yesterday, Mr. Gunawardane said there was no issue in recognizing the achievement or skills of the student who is from a private school and became island 1st in Arts subjects.

“However, the Education ministry has never previously taken results of private applicants into consideration when issuing results. This is out of laws and regulations and completely wrong. The ministry cannot take the results of schools which are not under its purview, for analysing,” he said.

He said the laws should be changed if the ministry is to analyse results of both government school and private applicants together.

“According to the National Education Policy, there is a law saying private sector cannot start classes from grade five to 14. When there is a law, it is unfair to approve something out of it,” he said. (Lahiru Pothmulla)
