The Sri Lanka Information Technology Association (SLITA) requests people to be vigilant when receiving messages claiming 'giving free gifts' through social media applications.

SLITA Chairman Rajiv Yasiru Kuruwitage said more than a hundred complaints were received by their association with regards to using various web addresses and brand names of well-known companies

"Through these fake messages, cyber attackers can intrude into peoples' sensitive personal data at any time and could even hack your social media accounts," he said.

People might also have installed malicious software or applications unknowingly on their smartphones through these fake messages and thereby leave room for the culprits to steal your personal data, Mr. Kuruwitage said.

Therefore, the SLITA requests the public to be watchful when clicking on such fake messages. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
