Around 9,000 offenders incl. motorcyclists charges during special operation

Police in an island-wide operation to minimise motorcycle accidents, apprehended 8,957 people who were involved in various offences, police said.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the operation commenced from March 31 and will continue till today (3).

A total number of 295 motorcycles have been taken under police custody  during the operations carried out from March 31 to April 1.

The police media spokesman said the motorcycles had various defects and found unroadworthy.

During the period, 264 motorcyclists were also arrested.

DIG Rohana said, 85 motorcyclist who were involved in reckless riding, 80 for over-speeding  and 1,298 riders who were without valid riding licenses and safety helmets have been prosecuted.

In addition to these, 875 have been charged for riding without licence, 2,002 for traffic offences and 4,105 charged for other  offences, he said.

Legal action has been taken against 248 men for riding on motorcycles exceeding the capacity.(DSB)
