Alliance Air, the subsidiary of Air India, will send its inaugural flight to the Jaffna International Airport on October 17 with invitees from the aviation industry, an official said. The airport will be inaugurated on October 17 with the participation of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The airport runway length has been extended from 950 metres to 1400 metres and under phase 2, the runway length will be extended up to 2300 metres. An ATR 72 Aircraft carrying 70 passengers at a time can be accommodated.
Alliance Air has confirmed three flights per week from Indian destinations including Chennai.
The Road Development Authority (RDA) constructed the new apron, taxiway, overlaying runway and roadways. Airport & Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited (AASL) constructed the flight control tower, terminal building, fire brigade facilities, office complex and air navigation systems. (Kelum Bandara)
