All four accused in the rape and murder of a Hyderabad veterinarian in India were killed in an encounter with the Telangana Police in the early hours of Friday, the Indian Express reported.
The police had taken the four accused to the crime scene to recreate the sequence of events that took place on November 27. News media citing police sources reported that the four tried to escape during the recce, following which the police fired at them. The police are yet to release an official statement.
The 27-year-old veterinarian’s rape had triggered outrage across the country, with Parliamentarians suggesting measures like lynching and the death penalty for the accused.
The veterinarian went missing from Shamshabad toll plaza, near Hyderabad, on November 27. The four accused raped and then burnt her to death, the police have said. Her burnt body was recovered the following day. As per the initial probe, one of them deflated her bike’s tyre. When she returned from work, two of them offered help. When she agreed, they dragged her to an abandoned room, raped her. According to police, after killing her, the accused took her body to an under-construction bridge a few kilometres away and set it on fire.
The four were charged under IPC sections 302 (murder), 375 (rape) and 362 (abduction). (Indian Express)
