Akmeemana shooting: Soldier arrested

A 39-year-old father of three was allegedly shot dead by a soldier who was on duty at a school in Akmeemana when the man allegedly attempted to forcibly enter the school. 

The victim, K. Udaya Pradeep Kumara is reported to have attempted to grab the firearm of the soldier when he obstructed the man from entering the school. 

He was admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital with gunshot wounds but later succumbed to his injuries. Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said the deceased had three children studying at the school. 

The man has reportedly tried to enter the school premises after he was informed by the school that one of his children had fallen sick. According to the police, two soldiers had been deployed to provide security to the school. 

While one of them was guarding one main entrance to the school, the victim had tried to enter the school premises by force without subjected himself to security checks and had attempted to grab the soldier's firearm by overpowering him. Meanwhile, the Army said today that the Akmeemana Police and the Military Police are conducting investigations into the matter. 

The soldier was arrested by the police in connection with the incident. The victim was a former member of the Sri Lanka Navy band.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya, Ravi Liyanage and D. G. Sugathapala)
