Akila hits out at Bandula

Condemning the statement made by MP Bandula Gunawardena that it was not proper to couple the GCE A/L examination results of national and international schools, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said the MP was attempting to destroy free education in the country.

"The MP has said the GCE A/L results of national and international schools should be released separately. According to what he say international school students could only sit for international exams and claimed that when he was education minister he had never allowed international school students to sit for national exams," the minister said.

He said the MP who used to be a private tuition master before his ministerial post was making baseless claims in keeping with his narrow political agendas.

"Any Sri Lankan has a right to sit for any examination conducted by the examination department. It does not matter whether the candidate has studied at a national or international school," the minister said. "As Education Minister, I should remind MP Gunawardena that the Examinations Department cannot act in an irregular manner when issuing examination results. The children of our country have a right to study in any school in the government or the private sector. We cannot allow anyone to challenge or to destroy their rights."
