89,000 War Widows

Some 89,000 females in North and East have become widows due to war, Ministry of Child Development and Women’s Affairs said today.

Deputy Minister of Child Development and Women’s Affairs, M.L.A.M Hizbullah, stated that there are 49,000 widowers in the East while 40,000 in the North.
 

“About 25,000 are from Batticaloa, of which 12,000 are below age 40 and about 8000 of them have minimum three children, but none of them have any form of income,” he said.
 

Deputy Minister explained that President Mahinda Rajapaksa had entered into an agreement that the Indian Government to conduct programs on self employment. (MB)
