77 kilos of nitric acid used in manufacture of explosives found in Atulugama

Some 77 kilogrammes of nitric acid which is used in the manufacture of explosives were seized from Atulugama today and a probe has been launched by the police into the incident, police said.

They said two suspects aged 48 and 54 years were arrested in connection with the incident and the suspects had made contradictory statements to the police.

“The nitric acid was stored illegally in three plastic containers without a government issued license and we will look into whether this was to be used for any illegal purposes,” a CID officer at the site said.

The officer said although they had claimed to have bought this from Colombo, no receipt related to the transaction has been found.

The two suspects were to be produced in the Panadura Magistrate court.

A group of police officers of Bandaragama Police who were conducting a cannabis raid at Atulugama came under attack by a group of residents last Wednesday.

Police said two Sub Inspectors and two women police officers were injured due to the attack. (Bimal Jayasinghe)
