Sri Lanka will commemorate her 73rd Independence Day today at the Independence Square amidst tight security and without the participation of the public due to the Covid19 pandemic.

The State sponsored main celebration is scheduled to begin at 9.00 am chaired by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and graced by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

However, foreign diplomats, Ministers, MPS and Police and Armed forces personnel have been invited to participate in the celebrations.

The Traffic Police has set in motion a special traffic plan for the city of Colombo for vehicular traffic as the Independence Day celebrations are held with full Police and Military honours.

The National anthem will be sung only in Sinhala at this event, like last year. (SANDUN A. JAYASEKERA)
