63 families affected in SL

At least 63 families have been affected due to bad weather conditions in the country during the past few days, the Disaster Management Centre said.
DMC Deputy Director Lal Kumara said among the victims were families from the Gampaha, Nuwara Eliya, Colombo, Matale, Batticaloa and Kurunegaladistricts.

It is reported that 20 houses from Gampaha, 8 from Nuwara Eliya, 3 from Colombo, 8 from Matale, 15 from Batticaloa and 34 from Kurunegala were affected by the adverse weather conditions which also left one dead and five injured.

According to the Met Department Castlereagh had received a rainfall of 70.8 mm, while Kukuleganga received a rainfall of 70 mm, Norton received a 55.2 mm and Maussakele received a rainfall of 44.5 mm.

Met department officials also said the South West monsoons might not bring expected rainfall to areas affected by the drought which was caused because the North East monsoons did not bring the expected rainfall. (Yohan Perera and Nishan Casseem)
