620 liters of illicit alcohol recovered

The Excise Department’s investigations unit raided a hideout in Maa-oya in Dankotuwa which was used to produce illicit alcohol on a large scale and recovered 30 barrels containing 620 liters of illicit alcohol and 4930 drams of goda which is used as the base to ferment moonshine.

The value of the seized illicit alcohol is estimated at around Rs.1.2 million. The bottles were about to be transported at the time when the excise officers conducted the raid.

One suspect was also taken into custody and the officers are conducting further investigating into the matter to arrest the suspects who managed to escape during the raid.

The Excise Department has stepped up its operations against large scale illicit alcohol producing hideouts during the last several months.  (Supun Dias)
