500 coconut trees to be cut down

Welipitiya Divisional Secretariat in Matara has taken steps to cut and remove more than 500 coconut trees that are said to have been affected by blight, which has caused much anxiety among the owners of coconut plantations.

Owners of the coconut plantations pointed out that an official who came with two laborers earmarked trees that were to be cut down.

The officer had warned that any individual who failed to cut down the affected trees would be liable to legal action and that the government would take step to cut down such trees and to recover the expenses from the owner. (R.G.W.Jayawardene)
