48 hr detention challenged in SC

The Frontline Socialist Party filed an application in the Supreme Court today challenging the move to extend the period of detention, of persons who have been arrested without a warrant, for up to 48 hours.

Filing a Special Determination application on Wednesday, Galle FSP Parliamentarian, Ajith Kumara moved to stop that the Code of Criminal Procedure (Special Provision) Bill be passed in the parliament.

Last week the Minister of Justice presented the Code of Criminal Procedure (Special Provision) Bill in order to facilitate the conduct of investigations for dispensing with the conduct of the non-summary inquiry in certain cases; to provide for the taking of depositions of witnesses for the prosecution; and to make provisions for matters connected with the arrest or related incidents.( Susitha R.
