At least four wild elephants were electrocuted at Vakarai in Batticaloa last night. They had been killed when they came in contact with a low lying high tension power line, police said.

Wild Life officials said this high tension power line had been subjected to constant damage by the LTTE and as a result it remains hanging only about seven feet above the ground, and the elephants who had attempted to cross this line would have come in contact with the live wires hanging so low.
