The police, have so far this year, suspended the driving licenses of 364 motorists countrywide after they were found guilty of driving under the influence of liquor.

Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said the police had requested Courts to suspend these driving licenses for at least for one year.

“There is a slight increase in the number of drunken drivers arrested during this year’s National New Year period when compared with last year,” he said.

SSP Rohan said 1,315 drunken drivers were arrested since the police launched a special countrywide operation from March 10 to 17 to check on those driving their vehicles under the influence of liquor.

Among those arrested were 12 bus drivers, 718 motorcyclists, 462 three-wheel drivers and 123 other vehicle drivers.

SSP Rohana said the driving licenses of 2,257 motorists were suspended last year from among the 51,764 arrested on charges of drunken driving.(Chaturanga Pradeep)
