2000 sq kms left to be cleared

More than 1800 sq kms have been cleared of landmines so far and 2000 sq kms remain to be cleared, Military spokesman Major General Ubaya Madawela told Daily Mirror online

Major General Madawela added that approximately 314850 land mines have so far been removed from former battle zones in the North and resettlement of those areas has also taken place.  

Further he noted that the remaining land which included jungle areas and farming land needed to be cleared so as to enable the resettled persons to continues their livelihoods and live without hindrance in a safe environment.

Army demining teams along with local and international teams are conducting clearing work in the north. (Daily Mirror online)
