The twelve women, who were arrested nearly six years ago, on February 28, 2006, on charges of having helped operate a brothel run under the guise of it being a rest house at Deanstone Place in Kollupitiya, were released today upon the instructions of the Attorney General by a Colombo Court.

When the case was taken up for hearing, Colombo Fort Magistrate Kanishka Wijeratne observed that twelve accused, who had been charged under section 2(a) of the Brothels’ Ordinance, could be released from the case after the Attorney General informed court that she would not be pursuing further legal action against them.

However, the main accused in the case, Maji Senadeera, who had been tried on charges of procuring women for prostitution, was not released from the case since the Attorney General’s advice regarding her had not yet reached court.
