Some 10,000 transfers will be effected within the police department during the next year, in a  bid to create a more efficient service, the Police Headquarters said yesterday.

The transfers will be given to officers below the rank of Inspectors from January next year.

More than 5,000 transfers will involve police officers who are now serving in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

According to the police these transfers would not be based on disciplinary inquiries but would only serve mere service requirements.

Meanwhile a series of promotions would be given to Chief Inspectors (CI), Inspectors (IP) and Sub Inspectors (SI) next year.

Police Headquarters said that they are in the process of recruiting new cadres for the ranks of sergeants, constables and Sub Inspectors. (Supun Dias)
