A Hingurakgoda resident claims to have been held in remand custody for 10 months until the government analyst submitted his report after the Police arrested him and produced him in court on charges of being in possession of a foreign-made pistol, which was really a toy pistol.

The Police arrested Prasad Kumara (30), father of two children and a resident of No.30/1 Yatiyalpathana South, Pinpara, Hingurakgoda.

He said he lost his job after he was remanded and even his brother had lost his job as well after he was accused of being an underworld criminal.

"On February 12 last year police entered my home and asked me to show the pistol that was in my possession. I told them I had no pistol with me. But they searched the entire house and took a toy pistol into custody and arrested me. I told the police that it was a toy pistol given to by brother, who collected antiques as a hobby, Kumara said.

He said the Police had not believed him but produced him in Court which had remanded him pending the government analyst's report. (W.A. Piyathilaka)
