The investigations carried out so far had not proven that Dr. Mohammed Shafi had blocked the fallopian tubes of mothers, amassed wealth in illegal manner or had maintained links with a terrorist organisation, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) informed the Kurunegala Magistrate's Court today.

When the case against Dr. Shafi was taken up for hearing in the court this afternoon, the CID also said there had been irregularities in the process of arresting him.

A report submitted by the Kurunegala Hospital Director said Dr. Shafi had performed caesarean surgeries on 3,479 Sinhalese mothers, 860 Muslim mothers and 33 Tamil mothers.

The CID informed that they have reported to the court about 468 complaints out of 615 received alleging mothers developed complications after Dr. Shafi performed surgeries on them.

It said 13 mothers out of the 147 complaints, which were being investigated, were produced before an experts committee but only two of them are eligible to be examined further. The CID said all other 11 complains were false.

Meanwhile, the request made by the CID to produce these mothers before a medical experts committee in Colombo on June 30 to be tested for their fertility, was rejected by Kurunegala Chief Magistrate Sampath Hewawasam. He ordered this medical test to be suspended immediately.

The Magistrate ordered the CID to report to the court after inquiring from the medical experts committee as to how it would conduct the medical examinations.

The CID said a large number of statements were recorded from medical doctors, nurses and other staff members who worked with Dr.Shafi and their statements had proved that he had not committed wrongdoings as alleged.

The CID said a decision would be made about further detention of Dr. Shafi after discussing the matter with defence secretary as charges against him had not been proven. (Nimanthi Ranasinghe)

Only way to find out the truth is to chase away this government. Who can believe an investigation done under this government?

When Wimal Weerawansa said, only yesterday, that the CID was planing to release the Muslim doctor, there were many angry comments critical of Wimal. But now it looks what he said was true. We have to take Wimal seriously in the future.

"after discussing the matter with defence secretary as charges against him had not been proven" - pray - is the country's defence in any way connected with sterilisation ? - additional duty for the Ministry of Defence in our wonder of Asia.

People who had surgeries and worked in operation theatres know very well that surgery requires a whole medical team. The story had no merit from the beginnings. Islamic phobia or utter stupidness ? Perhaps, both combined.

Drama or Trauma Anyhow this certification, the Dr becomes famous for cesarean in SL.

If no evidence he must be released. First complaint was ill gotten wealth. No submission on the ill gotten wealth.

    JJ Friday, 28 June 2019 06:16 AM

not surprised... next step is to file charges against the 100s who made complaints and get them to pay damages... and may be find evidence that some did it to them selves...

Confused Patient Friday, 28 June 2019 06:27 AM

Can't you accept Prof.S.B.Dissanayake? He explained the whole procedure in SARALA SINHALA to the media. What about the Kurunegala hospital staff who came out against Dr.Shafi? What about the promise to mothers that they will get compensation if they come forward?

I hope this good doctor leaves the cursed country. Sad to see how this beautiful country has been ruined by idiots

My prayer Friday, 28 June 2019 08:53 AM

Paper reports are diametrically opposite to our "famous" TV station. The whole nation awaits the actual truth. And may divine justice descend upon those individuals (including Tv Stations) who distort information.
