A nurse of the Kandy General Hospital has left for the USA, being the first ever Sri Lankan female nurse to work in a US hospital, Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLFEB) said.

M. M. G. Ruwani Ranasinghe, an SLMC registered nurse, left for the United States on Friday.

“She gets the opportunity to work in the USA according to an agreement signed with Karma Services, LLC, a Michigan, USA- based global health care recruitment provider and the SLBFE,” a spokesman said.

The MoU was signed in 2016 and the USA to provide job opportunities for more than 3,000 local nurses in US hospitals.

The Bureau said it has launched this job program for the first time and another 25 qualified individuals are being trained for nursing jobs in the United States.

The SLBFE said Sri Lankans who get the opportunity work in the United States, receive a monthly salary of US $ 5,000 and would able to take their family to the USA.

The SLBFE said to qualify to work in a US hospital, an applicant needs to have two years of experience as a nurse and should be working at present.

“He/She should have a degree in nursing or a four-year diploma certificate and the IELTS examination should be passed in accordance with US standards. They should be below 45 years of age when applying,” the official said.

The job programme is conducted by the Training, Marketing and Recruitment Division of the Bureau.

The Deputy General Manager (Training, Marketing and Recruitment) requests the registered nursing officers to contact the Bureau for necessary details via 0112791814, 0112884771.(Darshana Sanjeewa)

It is good to hear instead of Housemaids, sending professionals to the foreign job market. Currently, 80% of women foreign labors are housemaids. But countries like Philipines send always skilled workers to the foreign job market. Foreign remittance they earn at least 10 times than us. Good move. Even at the higher education level, we have to target skilled foreign labour market. Good move.

Congratulations! Women in Sri Lanka truly carry the nation, be it as garment workers, estate workers, foreign workers and never forget housewives who nurture the young.

Only by nature it's good. The person will leave the country with all their asset and family will be settled their and no any benefit of what they earn to motherland. But poor domestic workers who leave the family and relatives for few years and will be back to country with all their earnings. So, which is good for the country? Think think think.

It looks like good news for nurses. But generally what happens is that professional categories of people who go to the west never come back nor do they contribute to the economy unlike domestic workers who remit almost everything they earn to Sri Lanka.

I thought that a lot of Nurses and Doctors left the country many years ago because the Sri Lankan Dept. of Health Services never looked after us well. The general arguments were that because we got free education out of the system, that we should remain in the country. I left Sri Lanka in 1978!

One thing I can tell for sure, she will not have to getup from her chair when the doctor walks into the ward. All the patients are treated the same whether they are rich, powerful or poor.

The problem with SL professionals is the language skills, all round job skills (not just technical knowledge) to get professional jobs in developed countries. Job market in these countries is very different to Middle East. Sri Lankan graduates and professionals should improve on language, interpersonal, communication, presentation and team work skills before they can compete with others for professional jobs in developed countries. SL education system currently only concentrates on passing exams, which is not enough to get jobs in these countries. That's why both professionals and non-professional can only get jobs in Middle East.

To Hassan, and Arooz, and all the jealous cynics out there. It is people like YOU who work tirelessly to keep women and educated professionals shackled to an ordinary predictable life. Your narrow mindedness is what is holding this country back. So what if they don’t return? For every single nurse who doesn’t return there are 100’s eager and willing to get in. Shame in you!

Sri Lanka is good at exporting talent after spending taxpayer money on them. All nurses, or those going for masters or doctorates use taxpayer money to study and never come back or help Sri Lanka's economy, but they are good at finding fault with the rest who stays back in Sri Lanka and tries to teach them.. when the problem was them - who left mother lanka without paying it back for what it gave them!
