The Torrington Sports Hostel (TSH) has been quarantined by the Sports Ministry’s Institute of Sports Medicine (ISM) after a coach was tested positive for COVID-19.
Following a random PCR test performed on sportsmen and sportswomen and coaches in the Torrington Sports Hostel, one coach was confirmed as having contracted the virus, ISM Director General, Dr. Lal Ekanayake told the Daily Mirror on Monday.
The Sports Hostel is occupied by about 40 athletes, gymnasts, para athletes, coaches and officials, out of which 12 were randomly tested for COVID-19 resulting in a coach being found positive.
The National Pool athletes for the respective sports were training in preparation for international events.
There are six first contacts of the virus-affected coach while several second contacts have been identified and quarantined at the Torrington Sports Hostel together with the rest of the athletes while the coach is receiving further treatment in hospital.
