Former Sri Lanka cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan today (22) denied that he was offered the Governorship of the Northern Province, following the election of Gotabaya Rajapaksa as President.
Reports circulating on social media said that the all-time leading Test wicket-taker had turned down an offer which Muralitharan labelled as rumours.
"These are rumours. I was not offered and even if I was I would not have accepted," Muralitharan told the Daily Mirror yesterday, reiterating he had no interest in joining politics.
Muralitharan was seen to publically support the candidacy of Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the lead up to the Presidential Election, speaking at a event organised by Viyathmaga, an organisation headed by the now President.
President Rajapaksa called for the resignation of all governors following that victory and has already appointed replacements for some of the provinces.
