Sri Lankan spinner Akila Dananjaya has been reported for a suspect bowling action, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement yesterday.
Following the first Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand, umpires Michael Gough and Richard Illingworth had cited concerns regarding his action in their match reports. This was the second time Dananjaya has been reported in the last 10 months.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson was also reported on the same offence, although Williamson is only a part-time bowler.
“The match officials’ report, which was handed over to the management of both teams, cited concerns about the legality of the bowling actions of both players,” the ICC said in its statement.
“Williamson and Dananjaya will now undergo testing within 14 days from the reporting date (18 August) and during this period both will be permitted to continue bowling in international cricket until the results of the testing are known.”
Those who have viewed Dananjaya’s reported footage at the High Performance Centre believe that there was not much of a difference to his new bowling action. “I saw the footage when he was cleared and did not find any change in the footage we have received from the ICC on Monday”, one source told the .
Dananjaya can still bowl in international cricket till his action is again tested. However, the selectors may not take further chance and rest him for the 2nd Test commencing at P. Sara Oval, Colombo on Thursday.
SLC is likely to send him again to Chennai within ten days for further tests. This time he is likely to be accompanied by Jerome Jayaratne, it is learnt.
Incidentally, it is the second time in the last year the player has been reported for his action.
After being reported by the ICC, Dananjaya worked extensively with Piyal Wijetunge and his re-modelled action was cleared in February.
Wijetunge, however, is no longer attached to SLC.
After he took 5 for 80 in the first innings against New Zealand last week, Dananjaya said he didn’t need to change much in his action during the remodeling process after being reported the first time.
“There no big change in my action. Piyal Sir, (Wijetunga) helped me a lot after changing the action. I used to send videos to him and get more information from him. I am really happy of my bowling after changing the action,” Dananjaya said at the time.
“I have totally forgotten the old action. Now, I am bowling with the new action but there is no big change and I get all what I want. So I stick with the new action,” he added. “(with) The new action, I am keeping my arm at a certain point and that’s the only change,” he also said.
