Sampath Bank continued to showcase its prowess in the sporting arena at the 36th Mercantile Athletic Championships held at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo recently. Recording the highest ever participation at the event in Mercantile history, 2405 athletes representing 53 companies from around the island took part this year, with the 91 member Sampath Bank Athletics team securing the second runner up position at the event with 238 points. Sampath Bank has continuously performed well at this event, having secured the 2nd runner up position (every year) since 2014.
The other notable achievements of the Sampath Bank contingent were securing the Runner Up position in the Overall Men’s category, for the first time in the Bank’s history, being adjudged Champions in the Men’s Championship category, and clinching the Runner Up position in the Men’s Novices Category. Further accolades were received by Nuwan Vidanagamage (Best Athlete in the Men’s – Over 35 category) and Vinoji Premarathne (Best Athlete in the Women’s – Over 35 category).
The Sampath Bank team’s head coach was Pradeep Nishantha - Olympic Coach, Running Coach – Nishantha Dayasiri and Jumping Coach – Amitha Pathirana while Amila Wijekoon was the Captain of the Sampath Bank Athletics team.
