A shameless scramble for plaudits by UNP & Others

The shameless scramble by many sections of the political Opposition to get credit for Mr. Fonseka’s pardon and release from prison, that occurred immediate on his release, and is seen to continue still, seems to me to be an almost exact replica of this behaviour of crows at a morsel that comes their way. In all this tumult of greed for political vantage by these shameless political crows, all cawing aloud “its we who were responsible for getting him out, not you, or you, or you...” not one word of thanks, or at least even some hesitant or unwilling acknowledgement of the President’s role in his release has emanated from any of the Opposition, nor from SF himself, which latter is of course understandable.

There was no legal obligation on the President’s part to pardon/release, incessant demands to do so, both locally and internationally notwithstanding. In this respect, the Opposition replicates its shameless conduct/attitude as regards the Govt’s total elimination of the LTTE and its terrorism locally.

Another aspect of the Opposition's conduct on SF's release, is their asking for this and that, for more and more almost hardly after SF had left his prison cell! Without permitting the man who conducted the successful negotiations, Mr Tiran Alles, to handle the post-release aspects, the UNP and Co keep asking for facilities that TA may already be looking into, and may be/,may have already discussed with the President. All this a façade to give the impression that it is they the UNP and others who are sensitive to these aspects, and not the Govt or TA. Looking gift horses not merely in the mouth, but down its throat, appears to be the UNP’s strategy!

With the help of the international community Sri Lanka will become a democratic country, slowly, step by step. The separation of powers doesn’t allow the governments to use the courts as a political instrument. The release of Fonseka is an important step. All good wishes for the government and for all people who are aiming for a continuous improvement in this country after the end of the civil war.
