SAMPANTHAN’S AND GTF’S FRAUDULENT LAMENTS

That democracy is being slowly and surely strangled in Sri Lanka and that many a critic of the Government, particularly in the media has met with a tragic fate is indisputable. Both Sampanthan and Surendiran wax eloquent about the atrocities purported to have been committed by the Government on Tamils in the North. Sampanthan concentrates on the alleged attacks on meetings of the TNA.

It would be highly unrealistic to even suggest that any of these allegations are ‘total’ fabrications. However, the practice of attacking opponents physically is not something that is restricted to attacking Tamil opponents of the Government in the North. Such attacks have been committed on Sinhalese and Muslims in other parts of the Country as well. If either Sampanthan or Surendiran had any trace of genuineness or sincerity in their purported lamentations one would naturally have expected them to have commented adversely on, and cried halt to the attacks on Sinhalese and Muslims as well.

However, not only have they not done so, but neither Sampanthan nor Surendiran has breathed a word about the atrocities committed by the LTTE. Doing so, would, of course, have been totally contradictory of their stated policies. The purported Global Tamil Forum (GTF) is but a rump organisation seeking to be the successors and/or the heirs of the LTTE while the TNA and its constituents such as the ITAK, EPRLF, PLOTE and TELO consist of persons who, believe it or not, were so depraved as to actually accept the LTTE as being the sole representatives of the Tamil People, and hence not only of Sampanthan and kindred frauds, but of all decent law abiding Tamils who, unlike them, were possessed of dignity and self respect.

The LTTE repeatedly attacked Sinhalese and Muslim villages and murdered civilians of all races, genders and ages within them. Sampanthan and the TNA as well as Surendiran and other members of the yet unborn GTF were largely silent in respect thereof. The atrocities committed by the LTTE were never restricted to Sinhalese and Muslims. If a proper census is done it is likely that the number of Tamils murdered by them far exceeded the numbers of Tamils who were killed by the Armed Forces in the course of the conflict. These are matters on which Sampanthan and the TNA as well as Surendiran and other members of the yet unborn GTF maintained a ‘deafening silence’ - they did not dare or care to offend their ‘meal ticket’, the LTTE for any reason.

The latest atrocity committed by the LTTE in the last stages of the so called ‘war’ on which both Sampanthan and Surendiran waxed eloquent, bemoaning the sufferings of the Tamils during that period was the conduct of the LTTE in taking hostages by driving Tamil civilians of all ages and genders into a small pocket of land in Mullaitivu and keeping them there by force as ‘human shields’ while the Armed Forces of Sri Lanka converged upon them. Yet, both Sampanthan and Surendiran maintain a deafening silence about this atrocity despite its elephantine (or Jayalalithaa like) proportions. These among other things are some of the significant matters about which both Sampanthan and Surendiran are and were silent. Thus, while the LTTE kidnapped Tamil children and, abducted Tamil adults and held them in illegal captivity for ransom or for slave labour in its terrorist cadres; while the LTTE imposed purported ‘taxes’ on the people and extorted from them their hard earned money; Sampanthan and Surendiran were silent.

They either approved of what was being done, or (as is more likely,) they were too scared of the LTTE to voice any kind of protest. However, they, who were so mortally afraid of the LTTE as to remain silent in the face of all these foul atrocities committed by them on the Tamil people have no such qualms about engaging, whether rightly or wrongly, in virulent public criticism of the Rajapaksa Government and our Armed Forces. Strange, is it not ???

These matters apart, no appreciation of whatever nature has been expressed by either Sampanthan or Surendiran about the services rendered by the State and our Armed Forces in particular, to the Tamil People during the dark era of the armed conflict. This was an era during which the LTTE had de facto control over most of the Northern Province and parts of the Eastern Province. Yet, it was the Government of Sri Lanka, with the funds of the people (which were principally the funds of the Sinhalese people) which provided food and other essentials to the denizens of those areas; kept its hospitals in such areas running, and provided them with the drugs, medicines and equipment necessary to treat the sick and wounded who included those who had sustained injuries while waging ‘war’ against the State. It was the Government of Sri Lanka that paid the salaries of the medical officers stationed in those areas and, apart from the foreigners who worked there, had spent its own funds on training those doctors serving in those areas. Schools and government departments were kept running throughout that period and it was the Government of Sri Lanka that paid the salaries of all the staff of the schools and the government departments in such areas even during that era. Public examinations were conducted by or under the supervision of the Government of Sri Lanka and immunisation campaigns were carried out throughout the Northern Province and in such other parts of the Country which were under the jackboot of the LTTE. These were the services rendered by the Government to areas under the illegal control of a band of terrorists.
What, one may ask were the services, if any, rendered by the likes of Sampanthan or Surendiran or others of their ilk? They were hopelessly shameless scroungers who rendered no service but fattened themselves on tears of the Tamils. Deceived or intimidated by these frauds, the Tamils in foreign climes were compelled either forcibly or otherwise, to part with their money and make contributions to the coffers of the LTTE. These contributions enabled the likes of Sampanthan and Co, in the ranks of the TNA to travel abroad and be lionised by the so called Tamil Diaspora on so many occasions. So also Surendiran of whom we have not heard during that time and others like him, no doubt had a whale of a time in foreign climes on the funds of the poor gullible Tamils. One need only read that magnificent book of Professor Rathnajeevan Hoole entitled ‘The Return Of The Exile’ or `The Exile Returned’ [I forget which] to appreciate how frauds such as Surendiran fattened themselves on the hard earned monies of the beguiled Tamils living in foreign climes.

Finally, it was not Sampantham or Surendiran or any of their cohorts who delivered the Tamils from bondage in Mullaitivu; nor was it Sampantham nor Surendiran nor any of their cohorts who saved Tamil children from being kidnapped and Tamil adults from being abducted by the LTTE as well as saved them from having their hard earned money extorted from them by the LTTE. It was the Armed Forces of Sri Lanka who, with the boundless sacrifice of life and limb performed these monumental services for the Tamils of the Northern and Eastern Provinces. With a degree of ingratitude that is surely unprecedented, these monumental frauds who did nothing for the Tamils even in their hour of direct need, are sufficiently and unbelievably, so without shame, make strident demands that our Armed Forces who alone saved the Tamil civilians from the multitude of atrocities that were being committed on them by the LTTE be removed from the North – this is presumably because they, who have made a good living of the sufferings of the Tamils so far, want to continue doing so and do not want those sufferings to end because that would make it patently apparent how politically irrelevant they are.

Coming from those dark days to the present day what have Sampanthan and Company or Surendiran and Company actually done in material terms or in concrete terms for the Tamils in general and the Tamils of the North in particular? The most significant example arises from the constant harassment of these Tamils by the Tamils of South India and their fishermen in particular.

Fishing is undoubtedly a major occupation of the Tamils and Muslims in the coastal areas of the Northern and Eastern Provinces. The waters around those areas are said to abound in fish which constitute the likely catch and means of livelihood of the indigent Tamil and Muslim fishermen of those areas and food with which the entire people of this Country could be fed at affordable prices. However, that catch is stolen from them on a regular basis by Tamil fishermen from South India with the blessings of Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Jayalalitha and Karunanidhi who steal the fish of these indigent Tamil fishermen with impunity and thereby deprive those Tamil and Muslim fishermen of Sri Lanka of their livelihood. Has Sampanthan or Surendiran or any of their ilk ever raised a whimper of protest against this outrageous conduct of the Tamil fishermen of South India or of the political patronage they receive?? Today, we find that their Chief Minister Jayalalitha, has even said that the conduct of our Navy in arresting Indian fishermen who trespass on our territorial waters to steal our food are acts of aggression!! Obviously this actress is ignorant of the facts of real life.

Our territorial waters are as much our territory as our land, and no foreigner, be it an Indian, a Chinese, an Australian or an American has any right of whatever nature to step into either our territorial waters or our land without the expressed written sanction of the Government of Sri Lanka which is normally endorsed on a passport in the form of a visa. That none of these robbers of fish had a visa is indisputable. Their conduct in catching fish in our territorial waters is equivalent of a bunch of burglars entering the house of another and stealing his goods. There is one difference between those burglars of houses and these burglars of fish and that is that while the burglars of houses are not given patronage by the likes of Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh. Jayalalitha or Karunanidhi, these burglars of our fish are backed by all those powerful forces when they steal the fish of Sri Lanka and deprive the indigent Tamil and Muslim fishermen of the Northern and Eastern Provinces of their catch and livelihood. Why is it that Sampanthan and Surendiran and so many others including Michelle Sison, the `so called’ Ambassador of the United States of America in Sri Lanka, Navi Pillai and the UNHRC are silent on these matters? Is it that they are frightened of antagonising India? It certainly appears to be so. Accordingly, what weight and what seriousness can one attach to criticisms and accusations that come from wholly tainted sources such as these??
