Train services on the Northern Line came to a standstil last evening when the Colombo bound Yal Devi Express derailed between the Randenigama and Maho Railway Stations.
The derailment caused extensive damage to the railway line but none of the passengers were injured as a result of it. While the train had halted on a minor bridge after the derailment, railway officials pointed out that the derailment could have resulted in a major accident if it had occurred on the bridge.
A senior official of the control room said that a gang of railway workers and engineers were busy repairing the railway line and that the train services would return back to normal within the course of the day.
