An organized robber gang that often travelled in buses and trains all over the country and collect funds by showing old medical reports of dead family members and under the pretext of providing treatment to sick children was taken into custody by the Hungama police last morning.
Police said that the gang that boarded buses, distributed leaflets containing details of sickness and in proof they showed medical reports of children who had died due to various ailments.
A man who boarded a Kataragama - Colombo bus and collected money was arrested and under interrogation, he provided information leading to the arrest of several others. He was in possession of the medical reports of a child who had died of hole in the heart about a year ago.
Investigations revealed that they had been engaged in this racket for a long time misusing the emotions of the unsuspecting public.
Police said the king pin behind the racket from Kuttigala in the Bogalara area was yet to be arrested.
A police team under Hungama police OIC IP H.A. Chandrasena, and Sergeants Middeniyia Arachchi (26296) and Premasiri (55913) conducted the search operation.
