The UNESCO has decided to declare the Mahawamsa chronicle, the main source of Sri Lankan history as a world heritage.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Upul Disanayake told the media during the ceremony to mark the centenary, of the university library team of UNESCO representatives, who had examined the Ola leaf manuscripts containing the complete Mahawamsa in Peredeniya University Depository Library expressing satisfaction of it.
He said the UNESCO had formally informed him of its decision to declare the collection of Ola leaf manuscripts of the Mahawamsa as a
world heritage.
Deputy Vice Chancellor Prakrama Karunaratne and Librarian R. Maheswaran were present at the occasion.
