UK’s Home Secretary Priti Patel has been ordered by a secretive tribunal to review the ban on one of the world’s most dangerous terrorist groups.

The Proscribed Organisations Appeal Commission (POAC), an independent body set up under the 2000 Terrorism Act, ruled that the Home Secretary must consider taking the Tamil Tigers off the Government’s list of outlawed bodies, the Daily Mail reported.

The separatist group, founded in Sri Lanka in 1976, had been widely credited with devising the suicide vest.

The UK banned the group, formally known as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), in 2001.  However, another group, the Trans-national Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) – the self-styled government of exiled Tamils around the world – brought a case against the Home Secretary over the ban, saying the Tamil Tigers were no longer engaged

in terrorism.    Meanwhile, the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC), which assesses the terrorist threat in the UK, said the Tamil Tigers should continue to stay banned because they had failed to renounce violence.
The POAC ruled that Ms. Patel must review the ban, stating the grounds for renewing it were flawed.
The TGTE has mounted a separate bid in the Court of Appeal to get the ban automatically lifted.
The Home Office said: “We accept the POAC’s judgement  and await the appellant’s final response on this. The LTTE remains a proscribed organisation as at present.
