As a result of torrential rain experienced in the catchment areas of Castlereagh and Maussakele reservoirs located in the western slopes of central hills, the water level of those reservoirs was rising, an officer of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said. A CEB officer said that the water level of the Maussakele reservoir has increased by 8.3 ft. in the last several days and the entire volume of water has increased by 51%. The volume of water in the Castelreagh reservoir has increased by 8 ft. and the entire volume of water in it has increased up to 37%. The sluice gates of Upper Kothmale reservoir have been opened from time to time during the last several days.
The CEB engineers have requested from the residents living along the Kothmale Oya, below the reservoir to be vigilant because the remaining sluice gates would be opened automatically in the event of the water capacity increases in the reservoirs.
