The Education Ministry has embarked on a project for the introduction of ‘Smart English Class’ at all the schools by 2022, Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said.

Addressing an awareness programme for 200 school principals in the Southern Province on the introduction of such classrooms, he said learning English is not merely the learning of another foreign language.  Instead, he said it also amounts to the study of a link language for the exchange of ideas and views among different nationalities and while bridging connectivity with each other. He said there was an era when English was literally compared to the sword. He said it happened because those well-versed in English could enjoy perks and benefits in society while others virtually got cut off from them.  The Minister said lack of English language proficiency is a reason for unemployment.  The Minister also said smart class would make English language learning attractive for children.
