Parliament was no longer a law-abiding institution but had become a centre for fraudulent businessmen and their clients, President of the “Vinivida” Foundation Attorney-at-Law Nagananda Kodithuwakku said yesterday. Speaking to the media at Thalawathugoda yesterday he said that the people could not expect anything from Parliament. “The parliament had been made up with a group of organised people who used it to plunder the country’s public resources. During the past 41 years, the country has collapsed and the dreams of the people were not fulfilled. Parliamentarians used to plunder the country’s public resources in a free manner,” he said.
Mr. Kodithuwakku said, the recent Auditor General’s report clearly indicated that quarter percent revenue from public resources were used by the Parliamentarians.
“This country cannot be saved in this manner,” he said.
“According to the present Constitution, our country cannot go any further and also without establishing the rule-of-law in the country we cannot think of a future,” he said.
“In many countries, there is only one common law for all citizens. President’s Counsel Thirantha Walaliyadda also clearly stated that the rule-of-law in the country had collapsed during the past ten years. Now there is no law in the country,” he said.
He said the ‘1978 Constitution’ was not created for the benefit and the safety of the people but for the safety and benefit of the UNPers which cannot be amended.
“We have now passed 41 years with the ‘78 Constitution but no one can do anything beyond that. According to the Constitution, it cannot be changed without a two-thirds majority and a referendum.
“Therefore, people should take a wise decision to remove all 225 Parliamentarians while rejecting the present Constitution. If this happens this would be a constitutional revolution in history,” he said.
