A car travelling to the Pelena Gangarama Temple in Weligama crashed against a moving train at the railway crossing on Sunday evening. The driver of the car had died later on admission to the Matara General Hospital, informed Weligama police. The deceased, a father of two children has been identified as a driver serving at a tourist hotel in Pelana, and was resident of Kapugama, Devinuwara.
Police sources revealed that the railway crossing was equipped with automatic light signals, and fixed with two convex mirrors enabling drivers to check the railway track which the driver had failed to observe. Although, the injured driver was rushed to the Matara General Hospital in a 1990 Suwaseriya ambulance, he succumbed to the injuries on the way. The autopsy is to be held at the Matara General Hospital. The HQI of Weligama D. M Abeysekera and Acting OIC of Traffic Police L.H. Jayantha and a team of police officers are conducting further investigations.
