A stock of 93 live cartridges was recovered from a waste water canal at Kashiya Mawatha in William Place by the Mount Lavinia police. A gang of labourers cleaning the canal had noticed the ammunition packed safely in a polythene bag and had informed the police.
Police said the bag contained live MPMG cartridges, a kind of ammunition mostly used by the security forces. HQI Mount Lavinia Police CI Dileepa C. Perera said police had been carrying out constant search operations and recovered arms and ammunition recently and that the stock of cartridges would have been packed in a polythene bag and hidden in the canal. Crime Investigation Branch is conducting further investigations on the instructions of HQI Dileepa C.Perera and Mount Lavinia SSP Rohan Premaratne.
