A quack who carried out illegal abortions was found guilty and sentenced to one years imprisonment suspended for three years and fined Rs.25,000 by Bibile Magistrate Buwaneka Rajakaruna. He was ordered to publish an advertisement in the press, tendering an apology to the general public and carrying a statement to the effect that he would refrain from committing similar offences, in Sinhala, English and Tamil.

The suspect’s house was searched by Food and Drug Inspector D.A.D.P. Pushpakumara on a search warrant issued by Bibile magistrate on June 24, and a stock of drugs and medical equipment used in abortions were seized from the premises.
Food and Drug Inspector, J.A.Samarajeewa made submissions for the state on the instructions of Director of Health Services, Moneragala District P.D.K.Adikari.
