The 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami disaster was commemorated for the 16th year at the Pereliya Tsunami Memorial in Hikkaduwa yesterday (26).
The State commemoration ceremony had been organised by the Sri Lanka Disaster Management Centre and coordinated by the Pereliya Commemoration Committee.
About 250 residents of the area and 1, 270 passengers in the ill-fated Matara bound express train were commemorated by their relatives.
The Patron of the Commemoration Committee and Chief Incumbent of Pereliya Padumagabbarama Temple Ven. Pereliye Vimala Thera and President of the Committee and Member of the Rathgama Pradeshiya Sabha Ruwan Preethi Kumara were present at the occasion.
