The Cabinet on Monday approved the Health Ministry to enter into an agreement to receive the COVID- 19 Vaccines through the COVAX facility, to expedite the vaccination of Sri Lankans, Cabinet Spokesman and Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said yesterday.
The COVAX facility is a global initiative that brings together governments and manufacturers to ensure equal distribution among the countries. Subsequent to the manufacturing of secure and effective COVID -19 vaccines, 64 higher income economies have joined to create the COVAX facility to help poorer nations to find a sustainable solution to the pandemic. “The production and development of the vaccines for the COVID- 19 are being accelerated and ensure the eventual reach to every country in the world to receive the COVID- 19 vaccines through this facility,” he said.
“Sri Lanka has already joined the COVAX facility and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI). the World Health Organization, has accredited that Sri Lanka is eligible to receive the COVID- 19 vaccines through this facility,” Minister Rambukwella added.
