The constructions of the Wattala Divisional Secretariat building at old Negombo Road in Wattala has been abandoned halfway for over a year. The construction began with the then Public Administration Minister Vajira Abeywardane laying the foundation stone for the building several years ago.
The need to construct a new building arose as the previous building which housed the Divisional Secretariat was in a dilapidated state and was on the verge of sinking.
The multiple-storeyed building has been left to the mercy of the jungle with many reptiles having taken it as a safe haven.
The iron rods which had been brought to construct the building can be seen abandoned to decay. The same fate has befallen on large PVC pipes which had become breeding places for mosquitoes.
Confidential sources said the contractor has abandoned the construction of the project since the Public Administration Ministry has failed to properly release funds to him.
