Avurudhu

Considering there was a curfew last year and no one could celebrate Avurudhu the traditional way, a year later even though the virus is hanging around us, it seems that everybody decided that this year’s Avurudhu was to be celebrated in the best way possible to them. The sound of the Asian Koel singing its tune from the wee hours in the morning to the traditional sweetmeats, the ceremonies associated with the auspicious times and all the games and exchange of gifts etc. happened to make up for last year too.

Reflecting on the fear and misery of a year ago, it was nice to see and feel that the entire country was in much better spirits and was ready to party and be merry.  A positive outlook towards life is a must and is an attitude obvious among us Sri Lankans. The hotels all over the island were booked out since the discounted rates were impossible to resist. This kept  the hotel staff busy and happy with the generous tipping and other benefits. The jet setters had no choice but to enjoy the beauty of the country and be in that holiday mood.

Life is unpredictable.  Hence, one must enjoy every day.  This pandemic has shown us how  vulnerable we all are.  What we need to remember is that the vulnerability is not limited to the virus and that other issues too could have a bearing. However, have we learned anything ?? It certainly does not seem so when you hear of all the goings on in this town; it seems that there has been no lessening of the viciousness, backbiting and insincerity that has been around us. I suppose we cannot change the world but only ourselves.
