United National Party (UNP) MP Sajith Premadasa said today the party would do its best to get former Minister Champika Ranawaka released in a legal, democratic and constitutional manner.
He said this after visiting Mr. Ranawaka, who is in remand custody in connection with a road accident which happened in 2016.
“Champika played a huge role in the presidential election campaign,” he said.
UNP MP Ajith P. Perera, who also visited Mr. Ranawaka, said that even though the government came to power promising to take legal action against the Central Bank bond scam offenders, those who destroyed forests, committed murder and looting, it had instead now resorted to political witch-hunting.
“This is a serious political witch-hunt. Champika is a powerful Sinhala Buddhist leader and was remanded for a traffic offence. The government cheated the Sinhala Buddhists,” he said. (Ajith Siriwardana)
