It was unjust for someone, who was convicted with the maximum punishment of being sentenced to death to be part of Parliament, which is the law making body, National People's Power (NPP) MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today.
He told Parliament that someone who was sentenced to death was not released on bail even after filing an appeal because of several reasons.
“A prisoner sentenced to death is not allowed to move with others or released on bail even after filing an appeal even though he is considered an accused. It is done as he might escape, commit suicide or commit another murder as the maximum punishment he receives is the death sentence which is what he is had received now. There are specific rules and regulations in prisons with regard to condemned prisoners,” Mr. Dissanayake said.
Speaking during the adjournment debate on the Central Bank annual report he said investigations should be carried out into the swindling of trillions of rupees of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) between 2008 and 2012.
He said a separate report should be presented in Parliament to reveal how the EPF was misused and asked about the fate of the Forensic Audit report issued on Central Bank bond scam.(Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)
