The University Trade Union Committee (UTUC) said they will decide to call off the strike action by the university non-academic staff which is entering its 31st day following a discussion with other union members in Colombo today.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror the UTUC Co-Secretary G. J. Ruwan Kumara said they had received a draft of the Cabinet paper and would consider calling off the ongoing strike.
“We would be having a discussion in Colombo today with other union members. There we should mainly focus on how the government will respond to their demands,” he said.
The University Trade Union Committee held several discussions with the Higher Education Ministry Secretary. He said a Cabinet paper in this regard was to be presented in parliament.
“Therefore, the strike was to continue until the Cabinet paper is submitted and our demands are met,” he added.
The university non-academic staff launched their strike on September 10 demanding an increase in their salaries. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
