Referring to the current political situation, United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera said he was still trying hard to unify the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) to ensure victory for the anti-UNP camp's presidential candidate.

“We have been saying right throughout that victory is possible for the opposition alliance candidate only through unity between the two main parties and I still hold that position,” he said.

The MP confirmed that the SLFP’s central committee would meet this week to discuss the current political situation and that no discussion had been scheduled between President Maithripala Sirisena and SLPP leader Mahinda Rajapaksa as mentioned by some media institutions. (Sandun A Jayasekera)
