Speaker Karu Jayasuriya had informed the UNF leaders that he is willing to be the catalyst of binding all UNPers together.
A statement from the Speaker’s office said Mr Jayasuriya informed this to Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa, UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and other leaders of the UNP when they met him over the weekend.
Daily Mirror reliably learns that UNF leaders met the Speaker from time to time during the evening. Mr Premadasa had met the Speaker on Saturday. Mr Wickremesinghe had met him last Friday.
“No one should be like single pieces of firewood which could be broken easily but should get into one bunch. I am prepared to become the means which binds all pieces of firewood together,” he had told the UNF leaders, the statement said.
Mr Premadasa told UNPers in Biyagama later on Saturday evening that he does not intend to divide the UNP though he would lead a new alliance at the next General Elections. (Yohan Perera)
