Refrain from submitting inconclusive reports: AG informs IGP

Attorney General Dappula de Livera today informed the Acting IGP to refrain from submitting inconclusive reports on five high-profile cases including the murders of Wazim Thajudeen and Lasantha Wickramatunga.

Following instruction by the AG, acting IGP C. Wickramaratne on Wednesday handed over the reports on six high-profile cases to the Attorney General.

Accordingly, the cases with regard to the murders of Lasantha Wickrematunge and Wasim Thajudeen, abductions of journalist Keith Noyahr and Prageeth Eknaligoda, the disappearance of 11 youths and the murders of 17 aid workers in Muttur, were handed over.

This came following the AG’s instruction to Acting IGP Wickramaratne to expeditiously conclude investigations into the aforesaid cases as the probes had not been completed despite continuous reminders.

However, in a letter to the acting IGP in connection to the reports submitted by police to the AG’s Department, the AG’s Department today stated “the reports submitted by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to the Acting IGP appear to be inconclusive and emphasises that this has resulted in an unsatisfactory situation.”

It also instructs the acting IGP to refrain from submitting inconclusive reports, to appoint senior officers to oversee the respective investigations expeditiously and efficiently while directing him to only submit completed investigative reports hereafter.
